28th April 2010 (Wednesday)

Hello cutiepies.

I forgot to mention yesterday a bon voyage for the W&W – hope things are going well in the Uk. Many thanks to the Pie for lovely pics on Pornflakes and Soddages, lovely as ever – and for the update, of course.

Not a scintillating day here on the face of it – or on any level much to be honest, another workaday plodder. I went in to help with Phonics today (it being a Wednesday) and starting to notice now how some kids are picking up speed on the work, some kids are pecking at it and some are already loosing heart because they don’t quite understand it. It’s interesting to see though, even the ones who approach a task with obvious reluctance because they reckon they won’t get it – if you manage to secure a few moments with them to explain things and nose them through the problem, if you get them to listen and they follow, they’ll generally get it and suddenly the lights go on and there’s a little look of astonishment that’s very rewarding. However, now that they’re gaining a bit of speed in class, the Non is managing to get her teeth into things just a little bit more – I think as the proportion of ‘difficult’ questions goes up so will her confidence. I know for a fact that she was the only one in the entire class who anything like managed a question on ‘finding rhyming words’ and writing them out – well, she doesn’t know that but I did notice that she hared through the questions, did the rest and proudly slammed down her pencil with a ‘done it’ while the others were still struggling – quite different to before, even if she did have the same capabilities. She’s also now started to sit at the very front of the class when it’s time to sit on the floor in a circle, not at the very back, picking her nose, and I could hear her voice even above the others in some of the answers. She’s still got plenty of things to improve on, but I’m also noticing that the kids are sort of edging towards her generally – in class, at least. I mean, they’re all lovely and very friendly, always have been – but there’s a sort of gravity that’s acting there because of her obviously ‘knowing what to do’. No necessarily there at playtime, lunchtime, things like that – in fact, I have no idea. In short, I’m definitely gathering that all the strenuous ejjimacation we’ve been doing over the last two or three years hasn’t been in vain, and it’s helping in areas that are not necessarily academic – which was of course the intention, so quite happy with that. Compared to say, a year ago, she’s got almost none of that Dyspraxic’s low-self-esteem oozing out of her. A bit absent sometimes, a bit shy quite often, but quite reasonably confident mostly.

Ramble ramble. The Mr came home early today, partly because I asked him to because I’d got an appointment to register with the doc’s, partly because he still isn’t feeling too chirpy. Poor thing, definitely still looking green round the gills. Seems to have perked up a little this evening but definitely going to try and get him to bed soon. Ah, forgotten what if anything else was going to say. Never mind, bedtime. Lots of love to all, V xxxx

  1. Poor Flea, hope he'll feel better soon- thanks for comments yourself! GRAND to hear- as one suspected by her huge smiles these days- that she is sitting up at the front of the class and got so much confidence- obviously making friends, and that you get to see all of it once a week- which is so important, much better than once a 3 month teacher parent conferences where you're none the wiser- and as far as a bit shy is concerned, if it's in limits, and not the concerned level- it's normal, and imagine how well she is doing (and you know it anyway) in a completely new environment across the world and adjusting so well. And quietly shy of people was quite a lot your trait anyway, as you said once a couple of years ago- don't feel like it (making lots of friends) or pouring my feelings down to a stranger anyway, can't be bothered- I wouldn't say that you were so very different, in many ways. She certainly doesn't seem to have a problem expressing herself when she wants to! It's really good in a way, at least you don't get trampled on. Well done all round, specially Lara-non! We're off to Palm Springs for the weekend, thought we'd go and stay the night for a change, just a go-and-try-your-luck thing, without reserving stuff in advance (I LOVE that! NO itinerary- it drives Mako crazy but enjoys it in the end) hope it'll be fun, this is about the last time to go to the desert area, hot enough as it is. Loved the name of Occy Salad, will use it myself if you don't mind- lovely looking, and forgot to add that I make often just the same salad (the shepherds one) only with some small cut up tomatoes (for Nea) and celery stalks as well- I KNOW! It's sOOO good- and lovely to see it up in a pic!

Lots of love and happy Thursday, just put down a story of Leo's on my place by the way- he wanted you to read it, he knows you're the literary part of the family so he said oh oh, if you want to put it down, let Auntie Ninja see it! Anyway off goes,
