21st April 2010 (Wednesday)

Wow many thanks to the Pie for the once again lovely pics on the My Family site…. As ever, gorgeous, all of them. I’m noticing that Leo is missing out on photo exposure… whether this is due to not standing still, or unwillingness, or novelty value, or his younger sibling’s developments in adorable pouts and whisps of long traily hair, but can I just say they’re every bit as gorgeous as each other and I demand a higher input of Leo pics. Hasten to add, this is not to cut back on Nea pics. Now, I know there are very few of the adults but I know the problems of that all too well – in the meantime, the latest was absolutely lovely. Thank you!

Today, Australia. What happened. Hm – went in for my Wednesday session helping out with the Phonics classes – noted the numbers of parents were down by 50% but happily the kids seemed to be coping perfectly well. I managed two tables instead of one and it seemed adequate supervision, as with the other two. Noticed Non is still a bit slow in some places but improving nicely. Instance – they had to cut out a green-coloured frog and a fly from one sheet, accordion-fold a long strip of a pink tongue and glue it onto the frog, attach the fly. Teacher explained how to do it, Non not happy and expressed volubly that she didn’t know how to do it. Nevertheless went to the table and got going, and I briefly told her to cut out the frog and the fly first – which she did. Then did the first fold of her accordion tongue with her, after which she pushed me away and told me she’d do it herself – which she did, no problems. Now, this is better than before on so many levels: Firstly, exclaiming about not knowing how to do it. In fact that’s probably the most impressive improvement. Next, listening to instructions to both cut the figures out, and the folding. Third, the will to do it on her own, once she reckoned she would be able to. And she was pretty pleased with the finished frog, too, and didn’t take too long in making him.

I also noted with quite a lot of amazement that some of the kids there are REALLY quite clever. Now, I know for a fact that both Lillian and Lucy don’t know how to read properly yet. There’s a sort of word-puzzle they seem keen on here, which is kind of letter-shape-count-recognition practice – you have to match (say) ‘fairy’ to an empty block of letter-spaces that are spaced ‘tall, short short short long’ (as per what the letters look like). Now, the Non can read very well and I’ve been doing these exercises with her for a considerable time, and she still finds them pretty difficult without prompting. Those girls can probably barely remember what the letters are, haven’t been tutored at home (as I know), and they were racing ahead to go and solve the puzzles, and succeeded without any real help at all. Now frankly, that’s impressive. I think Logic muscles are the next ones to come under focus, now that the Maths ones are pretty much up to par for her age. The eternal cycle, eh? If it’s not one thing, it’s the next.

… Mind you, have to confess, I think it was probably because I was quite impressed by the kids’ obvious intelligence that I wasted a good half-hour at home later finding some IQ tests online and taking a couple. Some you find are simply ridiculous – sort of questions you find on ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ almost and just laughable -found another one that seemed a bit more rigorous and indeed, found that I was hopeless on both the number-sequencing and pattern recognition – same sort of thing, really. Other stuff was quite simple. I think by the sounds of things the Non is not far off the same path… hoping she might have picked up a bit of pattern recognition and logic from her father but perhaps not, eh. Well, she’s certainly better at spatial cognition than I am – she knows her way round places all right. At least that’s one thing. Small mercies.

Bored now. Lots of love, V xxx

  1. Wow it's windy. Excellent posts especially the last one- with the pest control and all, reminded me of something shiveringly similar to the classic film Arachnophobia; tee hee. Not saying that I don't have to take care myself; saw a dying cockroach outside the other day, never in the house but once they're around, they're around. I think that the ant powder I put every month and a half in a circle around the premises (totally un-organic and harmful, sorry earth, but I'm a human pest and wanted the others out of the house)- keeps them at bay quite well, still, one has to do that before it rains (has to get it soaked into the ground and don't want the wind carrying it anywhere)- and as you know there's precious little of that around in LA for the next 8 months or so, though this April has been very enjoyable and even a few scattered showers. (or as it would say on the SoCal News- STORM WATCH LA). EXCellent comparison to Califascism, couldn't put it better. Sorry about the pics, they are more a bit of We've been doing this more than anything else, and Leo's relative absence is a lot less to do with Nea having wispy hair and a girl in general, but more with the fact that I spend twice the amount of time with her (since he's at school) when we play in the park he now goes off very importantly with his boy friends and dissapear off in undergrowth finding sticks and bugs and dead squirrels and talking about boobs and weiners (which brings me back to the fantastic Lara comment on breasts- guffaw) - and when we come home it's more let's homework, let's paper airplane, let's play games more than actual picture taking. Actually as a subject he's better since one (sorry Nea) she's really cute and sweet and small and a girl all in all, but Leo has a more... handsome face all in all, not that it makes a slight bit of difference, but still- it's not on purpose, rather than a force of situation. Where was I- oh the boobs, we're all into boobs now, yesterday he was laughing his heart out telling me that "Today Cody said, he said...(huge laugh) the teacher said a sentence ""Mandy reached to scratch her foot" and Cody...cody said (hysterical laughter) ... he said scratch her boooooobs ha ha ha "... so you can guess the rest. Excellent. Not to mention that the other day he came out of the shower and said (since we always talk about it matter of factly) " Mummy you know I changed the setting on the shower to massage, and I put it on my weiner, and my heart went all thump thump, and it felt soooo gooood" - I guffawed and said " So was it all piiiiing up in the air or what?" "NOOOO".... and then rethinking " well maybe just a bit" . Then added "Well, it's normal right, Papa's weiner went PIiiing when he saw you, didn't it? " which sent my sides splitting and nodded " Well Leo I certainly hope so". Talking about weiners, we've had a problem with wetting at school again for quite a while, ever since he started to pay attention and finish

  2. all his work and really been trying hard, he had got rid of almost all his ticks - so something had to snap and it went to peeing in his pants again. It would always be " BUT I did all my work and I tried so hard" and " I just went twice but not the third time and then... you're not angry are you mummy that would really hurt my feelings".. Frankly all this California discussions and hurting of feelings is "creeping me out" as they would so nicely put it here, someones is always hurting someone's feelings or making one sad or some sort of talk of feelings and it's good until it gets into a habit for an excuse for everything. I've tried the lot believe me; charts, stickers, rewards, start-up methods in general, not getting angry, talking about it, setting a pee pee schedule tralalalaa, it's just not strong enough to shake his so totally-in-his-world (or as every Japanese has called him since he was old enough to walk "My Paced")-
I finally cracked yesterday and freed myself of all the start up methods and went back to the old half-blackmail one, right, obviously none of this is working and I'm not sure how to handle it, obviously you can't so we'll find someone that can; and that's a doctor, who'll either send you to a psychologist so that you can have MANY bboring conversations, or stick a whopping big needle into you, I heard they have REALLY big ones over here, and in the meantime you'll have to go to school in nappies, and they'll have to be the Dora ones of Nea's since nobody sells your size, so take your chances man" - which completely suddenly shook him, looked at me in absolute horror (and he knows when I'm serious I'm going to generally get on with it and do it) and begged NO I PROMISE this time I KNOW I can do it, NO NAPPIES PLEASE!" - none the too early, since the school nurse called me up today and told me that the teacher had been expressing serious problems around the issue, and whether he wet his bed or did it at home. Sigh. No, he doesn't, and never does it anywhere else either, the simple fact is that he just CAN't be bothered. But maybe he has a urinary tract infection, urm,... No, really wouldn't say so, it would be a very funny tract infection that went and came at very specific times. Though the threat I am afraid to say worked, came home today dry as California, said of course I can do it mummy, you'll see. If (as I know it will) goes all away in a puff of smoke, I'm just waiting where it's going to emerge in some different form. So saying, he's all together being very nice, lovely and super brother and son in general, and is sooo much better in not just work and concentration but just common sense and will to understand and talk and we spend sooo much time these days playing board games in the evening, now he can understand a bit more complicated things it's fun even for me, not just a I'll play with the kiddies thing. I got the Enchanted castle I loved to play when I was around 7 I guess and we (it's an old Ravensburger one and I only just found out they had recently re-boarded it)
had excellent fun, and he doesn't get upset at losing anymore which makes it a lot easier to just play and not let him go sometimes just so that there wouldn't be a wailing. There, that was a huge Leo adding on, and think that he would tell Lara that I think that your boobs are going to be lovely whatever size they are, frankly, since I had those engorged boobs with Leo I swore never to be dissatisfied again, still, sometimes one wishes to have a bit of a middle drift on a top without padding it up with a bit of fluff. In which the Japanese are very good at making, obviously seeing that they must have the smallest sizes on earth, in the US push up bras will be very slight indeed.

  3. So in terrible diction and again I think many of the sentences didn't quite add up, but I'm in a bit of a hurry, still have to do the chicken and then I promised Leo two hours of play, he's going to be my teacher at paper airplanes now, and Vens I can't say how your book for Christmas is being appreciated, really good one. The only thing is that they add up and I've got airplanes all over the place; air and under foot. I know I wanted to add a few more things on to your ones but can't remember anymore. Oh, posted some NHMuseum ones on myfamily, you could piss yourself when we got there, paid the parking and went in till Leo looked around with a cocked eyebrow and said " but mummy this wasn7t the one I wanted to go to" - but you said the NHMuseum Leo, that's the only one- look at the letters- no no, I went to it with my class, it didn't look like this... untill I got that he really wanted to go to the Science museum. Oh well, we're staying on here now sweetie, we can go there another day, and try and think about what you're saying next time. Actually, they had an exhibit open that was spot on the dot for both of them- a huge CRYSTAL (WOOOOW) exhibit for Leo that set his hair in the air, and a butterfly garden for Nea- so we had a really good time. It's funny to see how Nea always actually looks at the stuffed animals and explanations, animals and all the things that Lara loved to do- whereas Leo will be rocks and earth in general, although dinosaurs have never been an in, he looks over them in uninterested pout. I guess things will change again, who knows which way.
Anyway, so long from me- hoff I go, sorry for the crap, and well DONE Non in saying that you couldn't do something- that's a HUGE thing to be able to do, and some big people can't do it properly either, and congrats to the encouraging force that helped out! Lots of Kisses, XOXOXOXXOS
