9th June 2010 (Wednesday)

Humph. Utterly unexciting day but there we go. At least my black eye is calming down on the swelling-front, though in a way it’s even more noticeable now, with the ominous cicatrix under the eye and not much else. ….. Hang on might not have mentioned this here. Slipped while holding a plastic laundry bin, which leaped up and assailed me. Other day. Bumped down the stairs on my arse in the process so front and back are nicely mauled. Oh, all very puny but it’s always good for a laugh when one does something so stupid. Anyway at least now I can see out of both eyes without swollen flesh getting in the way. Much good it’s been doing me too.

I had the first opportunity to see Littles in her new Reading Groups setting… GOODNESS she was acting up, dear me. Quite shocking. Disruptive, not doing stuff, scrawling terrible handwriting in her notebook, you name it. Calmed down a little towards the end when she realised I was keeping a constant eye on her, but dear oh dear. Well that did it, when she got home I got her pretty much straight up to a good hot bath, fed her at 5 o’clock, let her have lots of sweets afterwards, made sure she drank lots, and read some books just long enough for Daddy to get home and tuck her up in bed. On way or another I’ll be targeting 6:30 for bed as top priority from now until the end of term, eating together is going out of the window. She seemed very happy with the arrangement today, I don’t think I’ll encounter much resistance.

The Mr had a boring-sounding day with stuff to do with marking papers and so on – more of it to come, and then the Friday day in Sydney (interminable) so he’s looking pretty pale as well. Poor mites.

Meanwhile just to cheer things up it’s been absolutely blowing a gale here today, the garage door sounded as if it was about to be ripped off and everything about this little cardboard house was shaking and rattling fit to split. Still going but not as dreadful as before. It’s windy, and it’s been cold all day. Well – cold. Still didn’t bother to put heating on but you know, in sweaters and chilly, it’s nice to snuggle under blankets and the eternal howl of the elements doesn’t make it any cosier. …. Littles is funny with her baths – likes them a lot and declares while waiting for it to fill up: “I want it Jolly Hot” “Oh?” “Yes, Jolly Hot. Not Too hot, Jolly Hot.” I’m not entirely sure she’s understood the terms of the ‘jolly’ as used here but one gets the jist.

‘Bout it. Oh, found out our tenants are out! (40 Somers). Hurrah. I think we’re inching towards the ultimate goal here… slowly, but (I’m not saying surely) …. eventually. Love to all of you, Mrs xxxxx

  1. Alan: Poppet has a black eye.
    Me: How?
    Alan: Oh, the Pflea!
Me (thought): I brought up a wife beater.
So, dear battered wife, so sorry about your black and blues, hope they disappear quickly: so sorry about the awful weather, does England begin to appeal again?, so sorry about the small Non giving you a hard time, all in all it is a sorry spell. I think you are doing the right thing by giving her a lot of rest, how much longer does the term last? Perhaps ignoring her while she plays quietly on her own might also help if she is used to be constantly stimulated, but I am on the other side of the world and I should keep my opinion to myself.
I enjoyed “Black Swann Green” very much too, Mitchell is a good writer, you can try also his “Number 9 Dream”, set in Japan. Others that I liked: “A Spot of Bother”, Mark Haddon and “The Book Thief” Markus Zusak. Whenever you want other titles let me know, hope your book reviews are a success. Once upon a time I would have offered to do some spell checking for you, but I am no longer as sharp as I used to be, although I still get most annoyed when I find print errors in books that should have been checked.
A couple of weeks ago I sent an e-mail to the Pie and I don’t know if she received it because again it disappeared from the screen, but I did tell her a long time ago that she does not need to answer my notes as she is usually busy enough. I was only congratulating her on her super children, I think she might feel a bit lonely sometime, like you at the other end of the world, we are such a scattered family.
Lots of love to you, look after your bruises. Kisses to the other two as well.

  2. Got 5 minutes, that is till school pick up time- I generally don't even start writing if I don't have at least 20 minutes but better something than nothing ( I guess?) Great that the jellies have come already- lord the USA-Australia connect is faster than the UK one- and so glad that more calcium stuff is ingested these days than before- well done Non as usual! Lord that girl is spurting on in new things, it's amazing. Nea has been up solid with no naps for a week, it completely takes it out of one- one cranky, two gives one NO time for anything remotely un-kid connected, third by the time it's six and they start bickering again one just wants to scream with frustration. Not to mention that this morning Makoto awoke in sweat and said "I had this terrible dream that there were cochroaches everywhere, lord was it scary"- 10 minutes later I'm making lunch packs and what should I see out of the corner of my eyes scuttling but a tiny aforementioned creature scuttling out of the microwave- OH NO! We captured it and safely spilled its guts out but what they say, where there is one there are hundreds... I've generally got stuff in airtight containers and I7ve seen them around the garden sometimes, but the house is so full of openings and cracks that it was inevitable I guess, I went to get some more in the dollar store and have been arming myself with sprays and traps and cleaning away this morning, know what it was like with poor Vens a decade ago and certainly that was the last thing one needs just at the precise moment. Ufff. Still have to get something done with the kids for Fathers day,
not to mention I haven't made or done anything for the Vense's birthday yet- time just goes by without a moment's pause and suddenly things are there, undone and unfinished and terrible. So saying Leo's got his first soccer-basketball practice today with a friend from school, it's kind of private with just the two of them, hope he has fun. That saying I have to spend another 2 hours in the park, which is not quite what I wanted again this afternoon. Shucks, one more minute. Urm, oh and I went to enroll or give an application for a preschool for Nea- it's next to Leo's school, actually a part of it- seems good enough, it is 5 times a week but only 360 dollars (which is really cheap for over here)
3 hours a day, I had given it all up for this year but... I dunno, they said they'd be enrolling the 4 year olds first, so it's luck if one gets in, I guess- hope so, she does so say school school every day, and although I enjoy having her around immensely, now that obviously the sleep is almost over, 3 hours would be like... well, at least something. Won't keep my hopes up too much though. Anyway, have to go, will write more again soon I hope- just so that you know that we're still here and kicking, and lots of love and kisses to you all and the Woofies too, (Thank you! and we are always so much cheered!) XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO S
