16th June 2010 (Wednesday)

Today’s doings.

Mr. – Various bits, including discussing the marking scheme for the last set of exams. They decided to up all the results by 5 points so that the results wouldn’t be too awfully different from the last year’s results. Part of the suspected cause of the fall in points was (wait for it) the Mr had actually bothered to write NEW test questions for the students, rather than endlessly recycling the old ones. Duhgh…. Oh, too difficult. Give ‘em 5 more points, poor buggers. Another interesting thing was, there was a question out (generally – like, not specific) – are lectures worth attending, seeing as all the lecture notes are available online and all the recordings are also available to listen to anytime you want? Well, it appeared that out of the 13% of students that failed, not a single one had a clean lecture attendance sheet. Some didn’t attend at all, some tapered off towards the end. Hm, I wonder… is there some correlation??

Littles. – Still temperamental, but chugging on. Haven’t had anyone over this week yet, must be an absolute first. They should be off to Sophie’s tomorrow. Slightly concerned about her Reading Groups performance – sill not sitting down properly and behaving, though several times when I whipped round today and told her off she’s actually just done all the assignment and was simply short of work – behaving badly and short of work, but nevertheless. Still, it’s the end of term and they’re all climbing up the walls. Once again I was on Computer duty today (hate it), had to dash from one to the other constantly to try and make sure they weren’t tipping over their chairs / poking each other’s screens / changing their fonts / poking each other / staring into space / hitting ‘enter’ repeatedly until there was 25 pages of blank space instead of a small typed passage / missing out all the capital letters and full stops because ‘I don’t do capitals and I’ll put in the full stops at the end’ …. Etc. She’s not the Problem Child by any means, they’re all rather hairy at the moment.

Mrs. – Hm. Well, school in the morning. Oh, the Littles’s jumper came back – seems Oscar M had stuffed it in his bag (I suspected that someone had taken it home by accident) and they brought it back today – however the clothing pool was open today so I got a spare one just in case it happens again. She’s been going to school for three days with my red jumper on because I didn’t know what else to do – a different jumper and she’d stick out like a sore thumb, no jumper and she’d freeze. This is the red fleece that the Pie sent so thank you again, Pie, it’s been very useful. I don’t know where the rest of the day went, between chores and putting up another little book review and sorting out paperwork and bits and pieces and preparing the dinner, that was about it. Oh, thank you very much for the story suggestions, Woofie, much appreciated. Yes, the Pflea is always going on about the black-and-white… came up again today, actually. No, it’s not going to happen. I took the ‘paintings’ suggestion a little too literally at first I think, and was thinking along the ‘girl with a pearl earring’ lines…. A bit limiting, especially for a short story. For that sort of take Vermeer is excellent, as there is very little known about his life, he has very few paintings and all of them are very famous, there are no living relatives and he’s out of the copyright zone quite completely. Impressionists and so on are not at all in the same boat – besides, the research needed is far greater than a short story of 2K words warrants. However if it’s just someone looking at a painting and a story that fits in with that – why, that’s a different matter. Well worth bearing in mind – if it mulches long enough something’s sure to crop up. Old wives’ tales – probably good twist or clinching point to something, but can’t think of anything definitive enough to base a compelling story on. Besides, the only thing that springs to mind is Croatian chopped onion on an in-growing toenail – and the memory and thought of that immediately stifles any though whatsoever, let alone creative ones. Still, I’m sure it’ll find its niche somewhere, and all very much appreciated. I reckon I need to write about 2 short stories a week for a while to build up a bit of a collection to be available for random competitions, so endless suggestions can all be thrown into the melting-pot for digestion. Much appreciated.

That’s about enough drivel for today, isn’t it. Love, V xxx

  1. Loved the chopped onion on the ingrown toe nail, does it work? Do you know the one of the burying a bean in the garden at night to get rid of a verruca? Of course it did not work for Alan, but some much more magic chemists liquid did the job. Shame though, I thought it was quite poetic. The Pf will also tell you that my mother did not like him to sleep at night with the moon shining on him, I am not certain if it brought you bad luck or if it made you ill.
I was not suggesting that you undertook research on the Impressionists, but perhaps make up a story on what was painted, for example what happened to the naked ladies of ‘Le dejeuner sur l’herbe’, did they just get up and get dressed or did they wait for some other painter ? or the rose window of Manet’s cathedral could have had some repercussion on the congregation and so on. Deadly?
I agree with you ‘ Chesil beach ‘ need not have been written at all, while his ‘Atonement’ is much more interesting.
Is the Pf expecting too much from his students? Remind him they are aussies.
How many more weeks does the Littles have before school breaks up?
I often look up Soddeges and Pornflakes hoping for an update but I think the Pie has given it up completely, what a pity.
Hope to talk to you all at the week end. Lots of love

  2. I love reading Woofie's comments and using PF shorts, especially things concerning important jobs and responsibilities such as " Students" and " expectations"- together with my Pf shortcut,
doesn't really come into the picture- rather things like " Small" and " you poor small" and "oh Pie..." Chortle. Thanks for even bothering to look over the soddages, I always feel as if noone is so in the end can't be bothered- still put on a tad from yesterday today on the site after yonks so anyone who wants to have a boring hospital account let them feel free to slit their own wrists.
Ah, can't believe that that is the only jumper that she has lost- although Leo is scatterbraino as it is, he's lost 3 by now, and that's mild- you should see the rows and rows of cardigans-jumpers of all sizes that are displayed on the hangers out of school every month and then taken in the end by PTAs to wash at home and take to foundations of various sorts but there as SO MANY not just dropped by kids but actually unclaimed by parents which I don't understand since I know each and every top and search for it till I strip the principal bare- still, there it is.
Oh Atonement- I liked that one, read it so long ago but think that either the book was better or the film- can't quite remember. I think it had Gwyneth in it. There it is, at last a book that I've actually read in the past decade.
I think Non is doing grandly; simply splendidly. I sure don't know what would happen if I went to watch Leo the whole time at school; frankly, better if I don't since he's at the age that would only get belligerent and sulky if his mum dared to tell him what to do in front of his class; completely understand of course.

There I go, and I left the P and S's account not to go rattling on on your lovely blog, and here I am. There was more, and more to comment-
still, 11pm and have been up since 4 in the morning, it's really time to go. Lots of love to Y'all, XOXOXOXOXOS
