Just a day of 'Boondi' apartments left! On Sunday we officially move into the next place, tomorrow we go to sign the lease (AGAIN, after the slightly wobbly start last time and the 'you've actually moved in 20 hours ago you didn't really notice it did you' last time). Then, we're of here. Mind you, if they don't let it to someone else and give us some money back, I really see no reason why we should give the keys back as we're still due for rent until the 27th, so might be back later on next week anyway but still, we won't be staying here.
Bit of a boring day most of the day for the girls, we just stayed in quietly and did work and cleaning up, the long-drawn out stuff like ironing sheets and washing windows, you know. Definitely pretty confident by now that it'll be left in a cleaner state than what we found it in. The windows were filthy but you know, it's a matter of principle. Actually, it's a pretty good argument against living right near the sea. Gosh, the corrosion, the salt, the dust! Unbelievable. The outside of the windows on the metal itself here are all completely pitted, corroded and worn away - obviously joint action of the salt spray and sun. The metal is literally rotting away, while the inside is pristine. I'm glad we'll be up and away from the sea from now on, even though it's not quite a holiday-feel but still. Mind you, it's not all roses and gardenias, up there they're famous for their spiders and no doubt the wind'll have something to say on a hill like that. Not to mention the debris and dust that's be blown along from all the vegetation. Gosh, it's amazing how the stuff grows here, talking of gardenias, noted those down as a potential plant for the 'house number 3' garden as they're outdoor plants here, as we realised when we say them planted in low lying beds at a shopping centre. A week or two later we went to the same place again - the gardenias were almost unrecognisable, they were thigh-high and romping everywhere in an uncontrollable manner. I swear it was not more than two weeks - possibly less. I mean, we've only been in the country of a month and a half.
What on earth have I written, and where was I. Oh, Thank you so much for the lovely comments Pie, I know you're there even if you don't have time to comment, you know, but we do love the little bits we glean from them, and it's always nice to hear from you. I'll try and post the entire recipe shortly for the squid - but really it isn't anything more than simple fried squid. Squid tube, cut in half, criss crossed on the inside, fried with a little oil for about 4 minutes. Of course, they curl up. Very prettily. There's not much more than that to it. Goes nicely with ripe mango. Choose your own salad leaf. The 'sauce' is finely chopped red onion with soy and nam pla, but really that's by the by. A squeeze of lime juice might even be better, actually, nothing more to it. Great.
Deary me, what on earth did we do. Oh, I told you that we did boring stuff during the day for the girls. In the afternoon we went for an 'explore', up the other way up the beach this time (Friday and the baths were of course closed again), towards Bar Beach and so on. Once again, a long trog, good exercise - though it was very overcast so we were pretty cool, in fact the Littles walked most of the way home with a towel tightly wrapped round her it was so cold. Still, we went all the way up past Dixon beach and onto Barr beach, and at the corner there she named three more areas - Cunjevoi Pool (they're the sea squirts here - more anon), Anemone Pond and Green Slip Rock. Hopefully there should be some cool action shots of the Littles poking the sea squirts and getting great results - haven't downloaded them yet. Anyway - that's about it. The beach at Merewether was so wavy that there was a 'no swimming, dangerous currents' sign out and there were no life guards out (though I think there were on duty in case some idiot went out), and the beach once again was littered with bluebottles.
Oh dear, suddenly very sleepy, lots of love to all, V xxxx
