Quite appropriately, we went to a birthday party today. Well, first we dropped Daddy off at the station to go to Sydney for his conference (at about 11:30), then we went on to the shops to buy a present for Lucy, whose birthday it was. (Non chose some Barbie dog-washing thing- well, she did say she wanted Barbie). Then went home, had lunch, tidied up, wrapped present and wrote card, and off we went down to Lucy’s (she’s just down Scenic Drive). My they had a good time. Face painting (with lots of glitter), butterfly cake, a magician, a fairy, gorgeous goodie bags, dancing and musical statues, loads of food, general mayhem for simply hours and even champagne for the adults – not shabby. She was quite, quite over the moon. And that was pretty much our day – only came home at about 5 and read some books to try and calm down, looked at some pics on the computer and quite rapidly to bed. Meanwhile the Mr has sent word that he’s arrived fine and seems to have checked in – his talk is on Thursday so there’s a bit of a while to go but I’m sure he’ll have a good time, he always does at these things (though I think they’re a bit tiring).
Then yesterday (Saturday) we had a lovely day, too. First day of the holidays, and we decided to go up to Oakvale Farm near Anna Bay – it’s a big Australian style petting zoo. Goodness, what did they not have free range. Chickens, sheep and goats everywhere, ponies and a large horse, and of course the kangaroos hopping al over the place and assaulting the Mr to get at his bag of food, a reptile house with some very fine specimens, oh yes and quite a few birds in the aviaries. Hm. On the cockatoo’s cage there was of course a large notice saying ‘don’t pet us, we bite’ – and what does yours truly do – of course, I go and pet them. One of the suckers lulled me into a flase sense of security by doing that all-blissful look while you stroke its head… then after a while whipped round and sank his beak into my finger just between the cuticle and the nail – I really thought he was going to have the lot off and was standing there yelling at him and trying to thwack his beak through the netting to make him let go – of course, he couldn’t give a hoot (ha ha – does that count as an avian joke). Blimey moses but he chewed me up. Luckily nails seem made of pretty stern stuff and today the swelling has pretty much gone down and typing is no longer unpleasant, so it seems it probably wasn’t as bad as it might have seemed but those buggers really have vicious jaws. Mind you, of course I knew that… I’m just an idiot. There was one bright thing about it though – made the bite from the ostrich I’d gathered a few minutes back seem like peanuts. Yes, I stuck my finger in there too. Well, they were in with the emus – and the emus are so wonderful and delicate, such quiet refined creatures they’d never bite you …. Ostriches, I learned, are not at all of the same mould. Belligerent buggers. … Sorry that was a bit of a digression into the depths of my stupidity. The Littles was much more sensible and of course exited entirely unscathed. She fed a goat with a bottle, milked a cow, fed geese and ducks of various types, and all the other animals mentioned that were roaming about the place. We got home quite late in the evening and she was more than ready for a quick bite and bed.
Well there we are. First two days of the holidays down. We’re woefully behind on doing work but I guess there will be an opening in the schedule sometime to catch up on it. In the meantime I’ll try to download/upload some of the pics from yesterday and today – Ian certainly took some good ones yesterday. Lots of love to you all, V xxxx

First of all thank you very much for the pictures, I was feeling quite Non-starved, last posting was on the 6th May! (I think). Now I can spend a few days viewing the new lot, I know we catch a glimpse of her when you skype but I like something a little more permanent. Just greed.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, oh Poppet haven’t they told you to read and obey notices at the zoos? Thank goodness there were no tigers in sight or you would have tried to strike up a friendship with that too, mad woman.
Have not spoken to the Camel yet this week-end I suppose he is busy with the chubby one. Hope Ian gets on well in Sydney and that he has prepared his talk before leaving home rather than just before having to stand on stage.
Hope your hand, fingers and nails recover quickly.
Lots of love
