12th June 2010 (Saturday)

Once more unto the breach, dear friends… Hope you’re all doing well. We’ve just come back from a very pleasant evening at Lillian’s house, they fed us Thai curry and very chocolate ice cream and we chatted quite uninterruptedly as the kids did their own stuff. Only left at 8:30 so bang goes the scheme of getting the Non to bed early every evening but worth it – besides, it’s Sunday tomorrow, she can take it easy. Several amazing things happened there, actually: 1) she finished her meal faster than Lillian and didn’t have to be egged on once, 2) she played with Lillian all the time and never once asked for us to come and join, 3) she ate a whole bowl of ice cream and actually asked for more 4) she ended the evening cuddled up on the sofa next to Lillian watching an X-men cartoon along with Aiden (Lillian’s older brother) and seemed to be enjoying it, though slightly scary. None of this would have had the remotest chance of happening a short while back so it’s all good stuff. And of course as far as our entertainment went Anna and Neil are extremely nice and easy to get on with so all in all a very enjoyable evening. Always great when you don’t have to worry about transport too, just a five minute walk back home.

Ah, yes. Urusei Yatsura. Let me find it… Ah yes, here it is… now, not for the fainthearted, this. Apropos of the cartoons I was digging up last night (mentioned it to Pie today on the phone – many thanks again for the call) also came across a related one with a cartoon character who is an alien and goes around wearing nothing but a tiger-pattern bikini and matching knee-high boots. Now, in a cartoon this is merely whacky and Japanese…. But once they put a real live person in the garb and have them posturing about in the same way it’s just jaw-dropping… anyway, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL8RO5iGD68 for Urusei Yatsura fans. Another interesting thing I found out (strangely) is that these Japanese cartoons seem to have a very strong following in… Italy. If the site isn’t in Japanese, it’ll be in Italian… including (astonishingly) for Tokimeki Tonight. Very, very strange. It’s been a rollercoaster voyage of discovery.

For the rest of the day… well. Late start, rather droopy, got to the library just in time to haul a load of books and some new toys out before it closed (‘Purple Hibiscus’ came in, among other things, so I’d better get reading and writing on it). The pile of books-to-be-read is now a 50cm high so I think perhaps I’d better stop there and get them whittled down before ordering in more. Most recent request – I need to get writing short stories for various competitions, so if anyone’s got ideas for twisty plot suggestions, strange bits they’ve hears off the news, suggestions for odd endings pieces have to come to, opening lines that are arresting, any bits and pieces like that, all gratefully received. I think I could just sit here churning them out – typically they want anything between 1K and 3K words which is just tiny of course so lots of different ones needed. Oh, by the way, many thanks for staying up so late to talk to us and see so very many of Lara’s toys close up, W&W. Hope you managed to get to sleep OK after that despite the heat.

Very sleepy myself now. Lots of love to you all, V xxxx

  1. How dare I make suggestions, very presumptuous surely, but I have just done the ironing and have been thinking about your request, of course just pedestrian little ideas which you can discard very easily and rather ask the Non for any of her thoughts. Anyway here goes:
Get a book of paintings, Impressionists are good or Chagall or Magritte, and weave a story around the pictures. Or get a collection of proverbs or sayings or old wives tales and see how true or how wrong or both they can be. What about a tale of a little black and white cat, that should make the Pf very happy.
Glad to hear you had such an enjoyable evening and that the Littles behaved impeccably by the sound of it. It is so good to see her taking so much trouble to show us her toys and introduce them by name.
We posted the birth certificate this morning, asked which would be the fastest way to get it to you and was told to deliver it by hand.
Spoke to the Gonzo this morning , he is still in love with his chubby son, and the Pobble posted us 118 photos of him, enough even for a greedy grandmother.
Hope you get to see lots of lovely and affordable and solid houses, perhaps you can send us the co-ordinates so that we can also see them on the net, it makes us feel a little nearer.
    Lots of love
    Woofie
