24th May 2010 (Monday)

Sure as hell there’s nothing of note to report on here. Just checking in to say that we’re not dead-in-a-ditch. Just fine, and very fat, in fact. Recently the Littles has developed a positively Bridget Jones- like obsession with the bathroom scales, except that every time she goes in there she weighs herself, and is entirely delighted if she sees the scales go UP instead of Down. ‘Oh, I’m only 17.6 now…’ ‘I’m 18.1!!’ (jubilation). Having not bothered to step on them recently at all, I tried this evening and was gobsmacked to find I’ve nearly hit 9 stone. Dear lord. Well I know I’ve been feeling hungry and not bothering to do anything about it but eat, and I haven’t been doing any exercise, but that’s extreme. There’s going to have to be some serious starvation ahead otherwise I won’t be able to fit through the door. Mind you I just can’t get too worked up about it, try as I might – so new doorframes might be the answer. Heigh ho, here comes middle-age. Well it’s about time, I guess.

The kids are getting tired – and it’s barely half-way through their term, I don’t know how they’re going to get through it. No half term to rest in. Picked up the Littles today, and after the briefest hello she burst into tears. Couldn’t understand what the deal was, had to sit and wait to try and fathom it out. The only thing I could get out of her was ‘did you talk to the other mummies’… why, no, I just came straight here. More sobbing. Did you want me to talk to mummies? (yes). To the mummies of girls, or boys? (short spell of consideration … girls). (dawnings of conjecture spread…) Did you want me to ask some mummies whether the children could come over and play at your place this afternoon?? (sudden cessation of tears, very large grin). Ah. Well unfortunately by this time we’d been sitting on the bench for quite a while, so there wasn’t anyone much about, so it was pretty lucky she said Yes when I asked whether it would be OK to play just with Mummy. I reckoned for this once, homework could take a back seat as things were evidently fraught on the Energy, Reason and Rational Thought departments.

Well we came home and played at (first) eating biscuits, drinking juice and reading a couple of books, then went on to jumprope (very, very rudimentary stages), limbo (total cheating from the Littles, though she did enjoy the concept and I think understands what’s involved after seeing several YouTube videos), Chuck the Tennis Ball and catch on Velcro mats (very odd game, that), and Relax with the Frog and Other Suppleness floor exercises (she just loved standing on my frogged-out knees while I was lying down on the floor, holding onto my hands and rocking wildly from side to side, screaming out, ‘It’s Captain Non-Non, coming to get you!!’ Now, I’m about as supple in the hips joints as any healthy person ought to be, but I can assure you if you’ve got an infant who’s 18.1kg rocking as violently as gravity will allow from one frogged-out knee to the other, you’re going to rock, whether you like I or not. I think he verbal imprecations assisted materially in the motion.

  1. What, a puny 9 stone? That is nothing, you should see me. As for starvation you need all you strength if you are to keep up with Captain Non-Non. I suppose she wanted Lillian to come and play, it was not that she wanted to listen in the conversation between two grown mummies.
How is your writing going? Did you ever get round to jotting down how you helped the Non get over her speech difficulty? I am certain that would be most interesting to quite a few people especially those who have to cope on their own with the same problem and would appreciate to hear somebody else’s experience.
We have had a long e-mail from Dickie and Phyl who intend to go to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand from Sept. to Nov., possibly dropping in on you for a couple of hours on the way. Phyl mentioned that she sent a birthday card with a little cheque to the Non and wanted to know whether she ever received it. Perhaps you can let me know, she says she does not want to be thanked but only would like to hear if it got there safely.
Sorry to hear that the Hirose family is very poorly, hope they all get better soon, I know a cold is not life threatening but it can feel as miserable as the bubonic plague when you get a real good dose of it. Lots of love to the four of them.
And to you too little Poppet.

  2. WE'RE here again- and alive- though not for long again today, thanks both of you- and woofie for always thinking of everything- Now, about 9 stones I don't even want to comment, you could be stuck through a needle hole and come out like a puff of smoke, or as the Croatian (and Latino) women call "osuseno" (or "dry", i went to Croatia very trim for my poor figure, feeling very good indeed at 55kg which is about as low as I can get without actually passing out) and they all gave me very worried expressions of "OH MY GOD what do they feed you in Japan (many of them know not I have since moved to a country of junk food) you're as DRY as a prune, poor thing"- anyway, let me not go on- oh and about the 18kg for cutie pie, Leo was that at... 2? ALthough he's stayed at 29kg for the past year and a half or so (means that at last losing some of that huge baby fat, still...) and grown upwards, bouncing him in the air after 3 was like hauling a hippo. Stayed on one subject- super about finding the store, I LOVE grocery stores and sometimes spend a lot more than I intended to just by the sheer delight of finding everything- oh just 2 dollars! just one! And suddenly- it's much over forty. You wrote about the aqua torrent so well, could just imagine it- and about Lara being tired, had much the same situ with Leo today when he came home from school- by now he doesn't cry anymore but just is fowl mooded about everything, took me a while to decipher what it was all about since now it's not "Mummy this and this happened" with a cry anymore, it's more of a "leave me alone I'm feeling rotten and I don't want to talk about it" attitude, so I do- but then, one has to sooner or later for everyone to feel better. So saying, we had a beautiful week (except the snots) and did SO much- I was just looking at blogs for kids for him to start one of his own, wow, he's really pacing on down there with the will to cook and do things, this morning the whole thing of just baking and making cakes turned into "wow, now I know how to put the fire on the right notch, now I can make my own eggs and sausage and put it in the bread, use the toaster, wash the lettuce, mummy, I can do EVERYTHING!" - and made his own yummy breakfast by himself, and one for Nea too- and CLEANED up!!! My was I impressed. He's getting so much out of it- it's fun, he's learned to do some fractions by using the measuring spoons and it was so clear what the fractions were when he saw it in action- in a flash- using the clock to time the baking, counting how many minutes,

  3. mixing and how to get air in to make it fluffy- so if he could start a blog, and at least write a bit of it, it would be complete with writing practice and typing, all in one. Before we do all this (he's still thinking about a title, he said Cooking with small Lions with big tummies but is still thinking about it) I'll post a few pics I guess, though it's the end of school I'll try and continue with him as much as possible- it's only dealing with a very dissatisfied Nea sometimes- it's easier during the weekends. OH LORD and we did some fun experiments- I bet you've seen it masses of times but do you know about a site called Video Jug? It's great and there are lots of fun things of "How to..." for kids, and for adults- he loved the "How to make fake blood, how to figure out buoyancy, how to make..." - oh loads, Ihave been trying to do the "How to do a wolf whistle" that I haven't been able to do EVER, or I loved the one " How to beat someone at arm wrestling"- I wish I had known that one before, it's excellent.
ANd I haven't even STARTED commenting on your lovely blogs and not even on our outings and already- have to go, they've seen one episode of care-bears (I know- why?!?!) and are now ready for some nosh and entertainment, I7m SOOO tired and somehow last week of non-stop AT THE GO got it out of me, not to mention not really getting over the snots yet- and Mako is in Arizona so sob, all alone for sleepy-time, so I beg you good morning, good night, looking out for more Vens- and the dinners sound GREAT! Which reminds me- have to put up one of mine that I think you'd like- polenta balls with some kind of meat of choice, chili and dash paprika and sour cream(or ricotta) and spinach jumble kind of affair, just excellent. Polenta balls are so good- just take a little melon ball maker and cut them out- and taste so YUmmy, and are entertaining enough for the kids to eat too. Leo demanded a curry day today, and wants to help out too- so I'd better get along.
    Lots of L, XOXOXOS
    There I go again,

  4. Oh and PS- got the vits, they'll be on their way on .. around wednesday, they only had two in stock but will get more- will wait for Mako's parents picture album to be finished tomorrow and then send them off at the same time at the P office, sorry for delay. Oh and talking of Lentils- don't know whether they bloat you up, unfortunately hardly ever have them on the menu since they are a definite turn-off for the boys-but sounds delicious- we had our once-a month eat out for lunch yesterday at a fish-market at Laguna beach- I got the cajun shrimp and seabass plate which was just derrrrulicious but Mako made a mistake by thinking the "chili rice" was a kind of pilaf, ordered it, then was presented with a huge plastic plate piled high with potato chips and beans, went back and said timidly.."Urm, I was thinking Rice..." when the one of the Latinos said " No problem, comin'up, take that one on the house" and after 3 minutes arrived.. a elephant dose of rice and HUGE amount of beans on top, and it ended up (since we hate throwing away) us force-feeding ourselves with a huge amount of beans and meat (don't misunderstand, it was really yummy- still, there is as much beans as the gut can stand) and giving up on the chips and stodge- we are still so bloated, I could hardly sit in the car this morning. WHew. Not to mention the farts. Oh my lord. Leo's been complaining of stinky house atmosphere for a day solid. Sorry, digression on a memory sparked by lentils.
