25th march 2010 (Thursday)

Groovy. It’s only Thursday evening but it’s a bit of a holiday-feel because the Non is off school tomorrow – there’s a ‘regional holiday’ in the shape of the Newcastle Show so school’s out. Ought I not feel more depressed? Especially as we’ll just be stuck at home and not going anywhere, the Mr’s not off, we can’t go to the show or to the beach. Never mind, it’ll be nice just to sit at home having a quiet day with the Non, perhaps just planning a few activities for Sunday, a bit of work, a bit of extra reading and colouring. The house is now nearly unpacked – one can pretty much find most things (though there are still a few gaps one stumbles upon and quite a lot of work to be done in the garage yet but mainly we’re settled). This morning we put the Non’s bed up and she’s hugely pleased with it – after a lukewarm reception in the morning and a refusal to climb up it this afternoon, she’s now shinning up and down like (as she puts is) ‘a black spider monkey with a veeeeeeeeeeerrry long tail in the whole wide world’ and enjoying it immensely. She’s got What A HUGE Moose in there plus Grumpy Salmon and is mightily pleased with herself.

Personally I seemed to get very little done today apart from faff around and unpack last little tiddly bits and pieces, tidy up, hoover, set things straight, wash and iron, clean the loos – all thankless things like that which despite not making a huge impact or being noticeable still need to be done otherwise the corners of the room start to close in, you know. The Non has a good sports day, and in the afternoon when I went to school I picked the two of them up – her and Lillian as her mum needed to run an errand. A very short one as it turns out, they had barely finished their snack-before-play before she came back but luckily we managed to persuade her to leave them there for a little. So they did a bit of colouring and cutting out, a bit of dolls house and tea parties, a bit of play with horses and they were just getting into the serious business of setting up a zoo when Lillian’s mum came round again and this time she meant business. However, all in all it was a short but very successful playdate and I think there might well be more of them. I gave the Non the special dispensation of not having to do any work at all today (well we did our reading but that doesn’t count), on account of it’s being a bit late by the time Lillian left and also on account of the holiday tomorrow. She rolled about in a most indulgent and luxurious manner when she heard of this, stretching and purring. That girl is easily pleased.

It may be a holiday for the kids tomorrow but the Mr has anything but a holiday. Poor thing. He’s got a meeting with a rep from a company at 9, a lab meeting (I think) at 10, giving a talk to the department at 1, and a committee meeting at 2 so all in all not a restful day. At all. Never mind. Weekend soon. Mind you I suppose we’ve got the party on Sunday but that shouldn’t require too much prep. The Non and I will think out things to do tomorrow.

Right. Lots of love xxx

p.s. Hey, where are that Woofie and Whaley? Should be back from Rome by now.... waiting to hear all about gossip, good food and general information!

  1. Hi there , we are back. In fact we got back last night, had something to eat and went off to the cinema to see ‘Bright Star’ a film by Jane Campion on Keats, quite poetic as you would expect. Rome was good but never ends to surprise me by how tatty it looks, dirty, full of graffiti, cars and scooters double parked everywhere, hordes of tourists (including us) making a nuisance of themselves. Anyway the exhibition was good although there were fewer paintings than I had hoped for. They were mainly on religious themes but with such a lot of movement , action, colour, light and shades that you were glad there was such a story to inspire Caravaggio.
The hotel we were staying in was all right except the corridors were extremely hot, like going through a sauna before you went to bed, and the mattress was so hard I am sure it would have competed favourably with the Non’s floor sleeping arrangement.
Good choice of restaurants all down the street and the one that the Whaley picked turned out to be really good so we went there both nights. First night we had mussels and cockles with and without spaghetti, followed by sea bream and sea bass grilled to perfection. The whale still had a little room for a chocolate soufflé with a mould of ice cream, I tasted it and it was heavenly. The following night Alan had risotto in creamed scampi and I had fettuccine with porcini, both very good, and then green pepper steak quite tasty and tender but disappointedly overdone. Another soufflé made up for it. Sorry about the boring menu descriptions but you asked.
Hope you had a good day today with that little Non off school and NO fighting; my poor Pflea seems to be having a hard time, hope he is not too tired.
We shall be off to Venice tomorrow at about 12 so we are hoping to skype you in the morning, it is always lovely to see you on our screen looking so well and tanned.
Lots of love to you three, we are also enjoying the Pie’s blog so love to her too.
    Woofie
