11th-12th March 2010 (Thursday - Friday)

Thoroughly intend to avoid being flummoxed again by that turdling little piece of software that is the Blogger site so I’m typing in Word. What a ridiculous scenario, in this day and age. Oh, another nice feature they ‘added’ (or took away) in the ‘new and improved’ publisher was the ability to run a spell-check. Now with my propensities you can well imagine, I really need this so I switched back to the old style publisher. Oh yes, it’ll run the spell-check for you now, but will it save it?? Oooh no, that’ll cost you extra and also be IMPOSSIBLE. Fume, fume, fume. Spit, hiss, snarl.
Anyway, where was I. Yes, kind of one of those days really yesterday, bit of a miserable entry as a result, wasn’t it. Well, sometimes everything seems to go wrong and one just wants to look the other way until it all jolly well pulls up its socks and decides to behave itself, you know. Another annoying thing was THE LITTLES and her BLASTED mug-shot for this passport we really, really have to renew for her – you can’t imagine how incentivised we are to get this done, as before we do that we can’t apply for the permanent visa, and I’ve discovered that if you have a permanent visa you can get the government waiver of stamp duty on your main home in Australia, which in NSW is quite a hefty 5.5 % and would make tens of thousands of dollars worth of difference. So you can imagine I was steaming and blowing away with a multitude of curses and imprecations as time after time she just REFUSED to look at the camera, not screw up her face like Popeye, turn sideways, purse her lips, do goldfish impression, close her eyes, bawl, yell, turn on the stool, you name it. I’m sure by the end of it what with one thing and another we must have taken in excess of 300 pictures of her, I swear, and only the last one was any good. Three trips to a photography studio, one attempt at a photo booth, countless attempts at home (for which she was relatively well behaved but alas the lighting was inadequate so they wouldn’t do)¸hours and hours wasted just for the one photo – honestly, I swear, the Whale will remember when we had to take the first passport photo that was a chore enough but this one was even worse. I could happily have strangled her on the spot and relieved her of the necessity of having a passport at all. However, one of the women at the photo place finally worked a miracle and got a shot that would pass muster. She looks like a criminal on it (as far as I’m concerned she is anyway so no problem there) but I’m pretty sure it’ll pass the board and we can get her a new passport. Little swine. She’d better behave a damn sight better NEXT time we renew it or I’ll just transport her back to the UK and she can tough it out there without a passport, I’m bloody well staying here.
Anyway. Not sure if there’s anything much to report really, personally I didn’t achieve much yesterday and things were slow. OH, however we DO now have a new phone number:
+61 (0)2 496 35332
This is the home phone, and I don’t think it’ll be of much use to anyone except those who have skype (and the Pie who’s wonderfully just got 500 minutes of free Australian talk on her home phone) but for what it’s worth, there we are. Oh, AND we’re going to have our stuff delivered on TUESDAY!!! Hurrah!!! Oh we’ll be so happy – mind you, apologies in advance if there’s no entry for that day as you can well imagine what it’ll be like. Apropos of which, we’ve just been looking into storage containers as we won’t be able to fit everything from a 4 bed house into this 3 bed one, so that’s one more little thing... worth it though I reckon, it’s almost impossible to be tidy if you’ve just got too much furniture for your space. It’s either a feast of a famine here, isn’t it – all or nothing.

Also in the meantime, been looking at all the open houses scheduled for tomorrow round here – there are some pretty nice houses round, not sure how we’re to pay for them at the moment (or any time in the future) but in any case we reckon we can’t do amiss by keeping visiting and learning more about what’s available. So far we’ve got:
http://www.domain.com.au/Property/For-Sale/House/NSW/Merewether/?adid=2008138897
43 Yule Road at $729K 11:30 – 12:00 (this one’s the Mr’s favourite)
http://www.domain.com.au/Property/For-Sale/House/NSW/Merewether/?adid=2008227550
55 Yule Lane at $625 12:00 – 12:30 (this one might be a bit of a waste of time, looks small and expensive for what it is)
http://www.domain.com.au/Property/For-Sale/House/NSW/Merewether-Heights/?adid=2008264016
13 Sun Hill Drive, Priceless (auction), 3 bed 563 sqm AT 1:00 pm – 1:30 pm
http://www.domain.com.au/Property/For-Sale/House/NSW/Merewether/?adid=2008142354
40 Rowan Crescent at $899 (down from $995 a little earlier – guess they pitched too high) at 1:15 – 1:45
http://www.domain.com.au/Property/For-Sale/House/NSW/Merewether-Heights/?adid=2008107723
51 Rembrandt Drive at $929 at 2 p.m. (this one’s not an open house but an appointment so we’d better make sure we don’t run late on all the viewings!)

And there’s another one I’m waiting for a call back from which I wonder if it’s gone off already as I can no longer find it on Domain, quite liked the look of it despite being only a 3 bed, they all looked very large and airy... 4 Elsworth Parade but I don’t know where it’s gone.

We also went to see another one yesterday which is off the books already – overpriced for what it is, strange old-fashioned decor, although immaculate and indeed the views are extremely good but I want more than a bloody view if I’m paying 900k for the property:

Really it’s just as it looks on the photos. However, it was the first brick house we’d seen, so we gave it a go. Also it’s on the main road (i.e. this one) only much further from the school. So there we are, houses.

Time to stop, your ears must be bleeding by now. Lots of love to all of you, Vxxxxx

p.s. just found that the mystery 3 bed one has been taken off the market, but the archive copy of the post is http://realestate.theherald.com.au/overview/447409/4-elsworth-parade-merewether-heights-2291/
only some pics and no description as such but you see what I mean. Anyway, not this one, it seems.

  1. Comments on your houses:

    1) Yule Road, 729K, agreed, looks good

    2) 55 Yule Lane, interesting, dropped in price, now down to 599,950,only 350 sqm plot, agreed looks small, and I hate the high walls in front, it looks like a prison

    3) 13 Sun Hill Drive: looks odd, has 3 garages!, nice bedroom, 536 sqm plot, only worth bidding up to 550K in auction?, or less?,, given 55 Yule Lane has dropped in price

    4) 40 Rowan Crescent, down 100K, (second one to drop in price), 441 sqm plot, in picture 3, is that a statue of a jockey?, noisy above the road? Made of plywood? Still seems expensive, but very good rooms inside.

    5) 51 Rembrant Drive, large pool, but some say maintenance is a pain, find out more, large rooms, decorations not to our, or your, taste, 607 sqm. We have looked at this before, as it is in Merewether Heights, perhaps repainted it might be worth the price? Long walk to Non’s school, a lot further than the Shack by the look of it.

    6) 254 Scenic Drive: again we have looked at this before and didn’t like it much, but it is brick, but the interior is odd and lots of heavy wood. Strange area downstairs that looks like a converted garage to provide a 4th bedroom.

    7) 4 Elseworth Parade : wonder why off the market – their chain broken?
    Also emails,
    Love
    Whale

  3. Congratulations! Looks like a really nice place. We're still houseless and the pound is dropping ever further. ... How on earth did you find this link? Google must reach into the most esoteric corners of the Net, I'm impressed!
