14th February 2010 (Sunday)

Happy Valentines Day, all!

...Not that we exactly celebrated in style. But still, a very tasty dinner of pork kebabs, sweet yellow squash on the barbecue and an interesting new-style coleslaw somehow seemed quite appropriate, all things considered. Must tell you about this new coleslaw, rather nice actually - the usual fine shredded cabbage but with celery slices (fine ones again) and really salad onions and green pepper but I couldn't be bothered with the latter two ... then instead of the rather cloying and fatty mayo option you mix up a bit of Dijon, horseradish and Tabasco, season, and then dollop in appropriate quantities of Greek yogurt and combine. Gives the satisfying crunch-versus-smooth of usual coleslaw without the lingering grease-slop on the back of the mouth, much recommended.

In fact, we're pretty much having to reinvent our entire cooking scheme, not only because of our very sadly absent spice cupboard and condiments store, but because we're now eating with the Littles and a whole swathe of things is just off the menu. We found that we'd been eating Littles-type veg-meat-and-carb simple mixes for a good month, and it was definitely beginning to pale, healthy and easy as they are. So we're slowly introducing a few new flavours - the dairy element in the coleslaw would definitely not have gone down at all a short while ago but I think now that she's five she's taking things in a much more mature light, and decided that she liked it. One down, about 2,000 to go before we get to a normal palate but hey, it's a step.

... Sorry, the Mr is being INCREDIBLY interfering and distracting and I've also just realised that I haven't actually written a thing. Very inefficient. We did a very quick bit of reading-work in the morning after breakfast, and hared off to the Baths before it got too hot - I'm talking 9 a.m. stuff. I did my 10 length again - no better than yesterday but at least felt a little less shell-shocked. The Littles did really very good swimming - a good 25 meters at least uninterrupted, and that's after doing probably about 50 with very short breaks in between. Really is nearly time to try and get her to conform to some other style than Doggie, even if loosely. There was the Junior Merewether Life Saving training class going on this morning, and when I say Junior I mean Junior - they were definitely no bigger than the Non, all in their little blue and yellow uniforms and swimming along towing their floats like little otters. Must have been at least 50 of the critters, place was full of 'em. Looked like good fun, perhaps she'd like to join in at some point - she was certainly an INCREDIBLY enthusiastic supporter. Stood there in the shallows yelling at the top of her voice at each one that came by, "GOOD JOB! WELL DONE! give Them a CLAP!! BIG Thumbs up for you!!" (with appropriate gestures). For really quite a long while. We also (on the way back home) saw one of the slightly older Junior Lifesaver girls (an early teen or so) being taken back to Lifesaver base in the robust little dune-buggy looking decidedly shell-shocked and wobbly, we think holding an ice-pack to her chin - suspect she went through the 'washing machine' (when you get sucked down by a wave and beaten along the gravel on the undertow - a pretty common occurrence in day-to-day life here), and collided with a submerged rock or something chin-wise.

...Anyway.... where was I. Deary me, quite lost track... Oh yes. After a nice bit of swimming which I think got us all quite tired, we went home for the old Fruit-Time / Work / Lunch thing, and eventually hauled ourselves off to the shops. Meant to get just some flip flops for me and some canvass shoes for the Mr at Kmart, but came home with a swivel chair for the Non, an ironing board, a beanbag complete with 100 litres of polystyrene bobbles to go into it (actually I misread the direction and we need 100 more but never mind), a duvet cover, the shoes that we wanted to get for ourselves plus a canvass set for the Non... Deary me completely bored now. We had a good time in the evening - the new sofa by the way has become the 'Potter Time' - the two of them sit on there and read the evening Potter until the Non stops him and says 'I want to go to bed now' in a most peremptory manner, every evening, and promptly gets up and does so. Anyway, forgot everything I might possibly have wanted to say and so I'm clearing off. Lots of love to everyone, Nancy xxxx
