27th January 2010 (Wednesday)

Having slated 'traditional' Australian food yesterday in the shape of Meat Pies and Lammingtons, I am as I write very happily tucking into what they call Anzac biscuits - which are very fast becoming quite a favourite. It seems they have a whole 'thing' going on here with coconuts because this biscuit too features the ingredient - lots of sugar and butter, rolled oats, and coconut; ends up sort of like a flapjack-light with a tropical hint. None too bad. Definitely choose it over chocolate biscuits. Also goes marvellously well with whiskey. Why exactly they're called Anzac biscuits I have no idea (no doubt if I'd bother to google it I'd find out immediately but sometimes I think it's nice to preserve a certain wonderment at the mysteries around one). Either they have something to do with Gallipoli or someone has a great deal of trouble shortening the degree title of 'Anglo Saxon Norse and Celtic' and is in any case way out of their depth and geographical limitation.

A pretty quiet and quite pleasant day for the girls today. Ian seemed fine when he came home from work too. We were mooching, working, reading and having lunch until the early afternoon today, and then headed off to the beach at one o'clock. Now this would normally be the heat of the day but actually it worked out just fine, as it was quite overcast today and turned out to be just the right temperature. We were there till four, while the Non was pounced on by a small scrawny specimen of a boy who'd probably just about turned four and systematically PLAYED with, so she had a whale of a time. They were being lobsters and crocodiles in the little pool to great success, and eating me wholesale. The frog episode was almost too splashy to stand close to. She also did some nice swimming later in the big pool (watched a bigger girl there of about 6 or 7 swimming VERY nicely indeed, Oh yes, THAT girl has been listening to her swimming teacher). Really is an eye-opener, takes a while to really get to the bottom of what can and cannot be done. I can stand there and shout and coax and tempt until the cows come home but she won't do anything but float like a jellyfish and tread water. Then a little girl swims past and suddenly she's whisked off her bottom-float and is doing the breaststroke. I exaggerate not. After a while of course the novelty wears off and she starts monkeying about again, but with each admission of competence her hold on the pretence of not-swimming-properly inevitably loosens. I am master of the art of stoical attrition, and will inevitably persevere. Oh yes. I'll get her to the Stockton swim in a few years, you watch.

As you see, not much to report. I'll cut things short. Lots of love to all, Nancy xxxx

  1. Just a quickie- Loved the yesterdays as well- and you know that those are called "Lemintoni" in Zg as well? or at least some people called them so. Maybe an Aborigine thing?! (chuckle) had my internet down the whole day- dont ask me its been terrible since the storm- I had tried the sofa in the morning, made a mistake of putting two in the cart due to the comp not recognizing "Vesna M" etc on the address, got it right with Ian Grainge after 18 tries and 5 gnawled slippers of our new puppy- then the net turns off and suddenly now I get a mail that I supposedly purchaced TWO pink sofas- and anyway, probably if I dont pay in 24 hours it'ss be cancelled, but they are very good at very quikcly putting things in your cart but giving you no possible option of eradicating them again. ALl sounds lovely, once I've got into the routine of things around here (again)- what with anew potty training and constant running around it's been a bit of a hullabaloo
.Well done Non on the swim- Yup we know that one, try your ass off 3 years and then in one afternoon it's there, from a source one's never had to visit or pay or do anything for. But well done swimming! Right, as soon as I get my paws into internet again in 2 days or so, I7ll get down to the schools a bit too, though seeing all the sites who knows if I could make head or tail of it. Oh, and the sofa (s?) will be along just as soon as possible- also please let me get the desk then! PP! (Pretty please!)
